Pioneering Regenerative Agriculture Robot
Client: Bardolf Farms
Sector: Regenerative Farming / Agritech
Funding: Innovate UK
Bardolf Farms is redefining how broadacre crops are produced, harnessing cutting-edge robotics to deliver more sustainable and regenerative farming systems. The company approached Flynt Technology Ltd to support an Innovate UK-funded project to design and build their first robotic inter-row mower — a system aimed at increasing soil carbon, nitrogen, and biological diversity through in-row management of cover crops.

The Challenge
With strong expertise in both farming and product design, Bardolf Farms needed an experienced engineering partner who could provide more than just design support. They required a collaborator who could:
-
Turn early-stage ideas into manufacturable designs
-
Build engineering processes into a fast-moving start-up
-
Support the manufacturing and testing of a completely new robotic implement

Our Approach
Flynt Technology worked as an integrated extension of the Bardolf Farms team — bringing structure, expertise, and practical know-how across the full engineering lifecycle:
1. Design Specification
Applied structured design processes honed through years of product development to define functional, performance, and manufacturing requirements.
2. Concept Generation
Developed and refined a series of feasible design concepts — balancing manufacturability, weight, and performance while focusing on value for the end user.
3. CAD Modelling
Created a complete virtual assembly using advanced CAD software to visualise the design, identify constraints, and collaborate effectively with the Left Field team.
4. Structural Analysis (FEA)
Performed detailed finite element analysis on critical elements such as the mower chassis, ensuring structural integrity for agricultural use.
5. Engineering Drawings
Produced a comprehensive drawing package — allowing parts to be sourced and assembled with confidence in their fit and function.
6. Manufacturing Support
Leveraged Flynt’s network of trusted manufacturing partners and hands-on experience to oversee production of key components and complex sub-assemblies.
7. Testing & Validation
Supported in-field testing, ensuring data was captured methodically and that the prototype was evaluated under real-world operating conditions.

Outcome
The collaboration delivered Bardolf Farms’s first robotic inter-row mower prototype, built on a sound engineering foundation and designed for scale.
Flynt’s involvement ensured:
-
A complete, manufacturable design ready for testing
-
A reliable and well-documented engineering process
-
A robust prototype capable of handling real field environments

Looking Ahead
Flynt continues to support Bardolf Farms as they refine the system and prepare for the next phase of development — bringing regenerative robotics closer to on-farm adoption.

“Flynt Technology supported Bardolf Farms throughout the process of bringing our regenerative farming robot and novel farming system to life. Ray’s experience was invaluable, giving us confidence to design and manufacture our robot and his knowledge of engineering systems has helped us to build a strong foundation to continue to grow from”
